Australian poet, critic and editor Pam Brown is a Distinguished Visitor at the University of Auckland in 2013. During her time in Auckland Pam will give public talks and readings, visit UoA classes and participate in a symposium on Poetry as Social Action organised by the NZ Electronic Poetry Centre (nzepc). In addition she will visit Victoria University of Wellington and complete a Tapa Notebook for Special Collections at the University of Auckland Library.

First Week

 
Mon 9 Sept

Pam in Auckland, staying in Old Government House (OGH) apartment until 6 Oct.


Tues 10 Sept Tapa Notebook Project begins with visit to special collections, University of Auckland General Library.
Fri 13 Sept Pam explores Northland with Michele Leggott and Mark Fryer. Returns to Auckland Sun 15 Sept.

Second Week

 
Mon 16 Sept

Pam joins English 347 Poetry off the Page class (21 students) outside Auckland Central City Library for Reading the City exercise, 12.30-2 pm.  

Tues 17 Sept Bronwyn Lloyd and Jack Ross (Pania Press) visit Masters of Creative Writing (MCW) class, 10-12 noon.
Wed 18 Sept

LOUNGE 34 reading at OGH with Pam, student writers and local poets, 5.30-7 pm. [Poster]

Thurs 19 Sept

Pam gives English Department Staff Seminar in Arts 1 Common Room, 3-4 pm. Topic: ‘poetry today : position and process : a montage.’  Refreshments to follow. [Poster]

  Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley (Centre for Media History, Macquarie University, Sydney) gives Inaugural Marcia Russell Lecture at OGH Lecture Theatre, 6.30-8 pm, Topic: ‘(Un)happy families: The Murdoch, Fairfax and Packer media dynasties.’ Reception to follow in OGH lounge.   
Fri 20 Sept Pam reads at International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML) in Wellington. Returns to Auckland  Sun 22 Sept.

Third Week

 

Thurs 26 Sept

Pam gives Public Lecture at OGH Lecture Theatre, 6.30-8 pm. Topic: ‘Authentic Local: an illustrated autobiographical sample of an itinerant local's pursuits in poetry & art.’ Reception to follow in OGH Lounge. [Poster]

Fri 27 Sept

POETRY AS SOCIAL ACTION. Symposium hosted by the NZ Electronic Poetry Centre (nzepc) in Arts 2 Pat Hanan Room and Arts 1 Common Room, 9 am-4.30 pm. English 343 Writing Poetry class (21 students) attends morning session. [Programme]  

  WORD AND WORLD. Public reading by symposium poets Adam Aitken, Ali Alizadeh, Pam Brown, Jen Crawford, Ya-Wen Ho, David Howard, Susan Schultz and Ann Vickery at Auckland Central City Library, 5.30-7 pm.

Fourth Week

Pam visits MCW class (12 students), 10-12 noon.

Fri 4 Oct

Pam presents Tapa Notebook to Special Collections, University of Auckland General Library.

Pam leaves Auckland for Sydney.

Australian poet Pam Brown was born in 1948 in  Seymour, Victoria, and grew up on military bases in Toowoomba and Brisbane. She has earned a living variously as a librarian, nurse, publisher’s assistant, postal worker, artworker and a teacher of writing, multi-media studies and film-making. Since 1968 she has lived mostly in Sydney, and has travelled to Europe, Asia, USA, Québec and the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions.
 
Pam has published seventeen books of poetry and prose, ten chapbooks and an e-book.
 
Her most recent book, Home by Dark, was published in 2013 by Shearsman Books in the UK. From 1997 to 2002 she was the poetry editor for the progressive Australian literary journal Overland. In 2004 she became associate editor of the international online magazine Jacket and is currently associated with Jacket2, where she recently edited 'Fifty-one contemporary poets from Australia'.
