The liqueur over coffee, the congregational
swaying of the boats in the bay

and the way Mozart’s notes glittered
into the sea, brought them to a consensus.

Life was agreeable they said.
I joined in, despite

Norman’s spilling wine on the tablecloth
Veronica had especially laid out.

The next day, I watched
an old couple fold themselves

and their library books
into what I presumed to be

their final car, and I thought to myself
how lucky they were, being

independent and interested in life.
And for the time it took

for them to bob away
I believed that too.
