from Karitane Postcards

Part of the song on the edge of singing
where one note stops
that’s not silence but part of the song
the waves surrounding Huriawa
all the ways out to sea and inland
a clear view up the Pigroot
Silver Peaks and the familiar smells
of sea and land and inlet
the sound the body makes pushing through old pathways
movement and breath want to sing
going further into landscape
till the feelings belong
living the life given the pleasure of plants growing
the daily service to others
what children bring to family and tribe
more proof of…I forget what it was
- part of the song antithesis of each desire
the centre not final no time past or coming
and the power here-in resides in places newly spoken.
