To the Topi whanau, the Woods and Hayward families. Tena koutou katoa. We are a group of writers, friends of Cilla McQueen Whaitiri, who recently held a hui at Te Rau Aroha Marae, and afterwards travelled to Stewart Island. For most of us, it was our first chance to experience the warm hospitality of Bluff and Rakiura people and to see the Titi Islands. We came from Sydney, Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Auckland, Wellington, Moutere, Christchurch, Dunedin, Alexandra and Twizel. We are shocked by the terrible losses you have suffered and our many thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. No words can console you, even less the words of strangers – but we want you to know that along with the rest of the country, we mourn with you the loss of your loved ones. Most of us have encountered grief in our lives, but never like this. Ma te arohanui o te Atua Kaha Rawa koutou e tiaki, e whakaora. May the love of the Almighty protect you and bring you comfort. Na reira tena koutou katoa.
