Suffolk sheep

Like cold white winter hands clothed
in black gloves: the black faces
the white bodies, the green fields

how strong beauty is: how compactly
assembled: the first day of gloves
taking them out of the drawer, feeling

the wool part and warm as the fingers
slide into their compartments and the thumb
gets special treatment. The Suffolk sheep

have always got special treatment. Design
excellence: the dark dainty heads compressed
in dark veils, the beauty of those cropping jawbones.
