Life in the Queen's English

Images of the grass lift

off the grass kinds of green
I've seen before and I know

if I get down on hands and knees
I'll not necessarily improve

my understanding of the feel
of grass. Watching shapes

in the rock garden alter
with walking past, a plane

of grey gravel tips . . . Lovers
learning to walk together exit

from the park awkwardly.
Pines like green clouds

a pantheon of Lombardy
poplars. The way words

like images lift
pull back peel

from their referents, leave us

longing for the intimacy
that preceded their birth
