Undiminished

— Nedime Hanim 3 years in detention on Büyükada

I cannot touch her; so taut with regard
the way she steps into first light, the
sea off Kadiköy; you can hear it seize her

‘We throw water after those who leave us,
may it not dry before you return –
there are things that keep their identity:

kadin diniz gibi, a woman is like the sea;
scent of jasmine, the sweet waters of Asia’
