(In waiting)

Here’s winter coming up
the valley, the last
of the monarchs sailing
past the hillside’s glossy pelt
of flax.

Farewell summer.
Farewell autumn.
We marvel at the seasons
and how persistent, through
all of them, the ivy
is, slowly dragging the washing
line earthwards. And how persistent
this child is, also heading
earthwards, yet turning back
again and again. Your body
too, persistent, longing for
memory to kick
into gear and relieve
this ache – dull – like
the soft thud of passionfruit
striking ground.
